Is it safe to install?
Short answer: yes. Here is exactly what your phone checks, what the app can and cannot see, and why it asks for each permission - so you can decide on facts instead of a warning screen.
Google Play Protect scans it on your phone
Play Protect scans every app you install - from the Play Store or not - and keeps re-checking it afterwards. FindMyPhoneSMS passes that scan: on most phones it installs with no warning at all. On some you will see "App not commonly downloaded", which is Google telling you the file is new to its index, not that it found anything in it. Tap More details, then Install anyway.

What the app can and cannot do
Not claims about our intentions - limits built into what we asked Android for. A permission the app never requests is one Android will not grant it.
It cannot read your message history
Android has two SMS permissions: one to see a text as it arrives, one to open your inbox. FindMyPhoneSMS asks only for the first. Every conversation already on your phone is invisible to it.
No contacts, camera, microphone or photos
The app never requests any of them. Android blocks what an app has not asked for, so these are not a promise - they are not available to it.
Your texts are matched on the phone
The code that handles incoming messages makes no network calls at all. Your secret word is compared on the device; the message never travels anywhere.
Your secret word is stored encrypted
Settings are held in AES256-GCM encrypted storage on the device - not in a plain-text file another app could read.
Why it asks for each permission
An app that finds a phone which is lost, silenced and offline cannot do it with less. Every permission below is the app doing its one job - none of them send anything to us.

- This is the entire product. The app watches incoming texts for your secret word so it knows when to ring. It compares each message against that one word - it never stores your conversations, never uploads them, and never shows them to us.
- Do Not Disturb access
- The only way Android lets an app ring at full volume while the phone is silenced. Without it, a lost phone on silent stays silent.
- Notifications
- Shows the "Stop ringing" button while the alarm sounds, so you can silence it in one tap when you find the phone.
- Location (Pro only)
- Read only in the moment you text your second secret word, and sent only to your own private map link. No background tracking, no location history.
- Run in the background
- An app that Android has put to sleep cannot hear your text. This keeps it awake so it answers the moment you need it.

Is it safe to install from outside the Play Store?

Will Google Play Protect warn me?
